What is the new 5G social tariff?
Vodafone has announced a 5G social tariff. It is called 5G Broadband Essentials, and the price Vodafone quotes starts from £11 a month, with no upfront cost.
Vodafone describes it as making it “the only UK provider offering 5G Broadband on a social tariff”, aimed at people on government benefits or people it identifies as financially vulnerable. That is Vodafone’s own claim in its press release, not a market survey, so treat it as such.
The tariff has been announced rather than switched on. Vodafone uses the future tense, and ISPreview reported that Vodafone would expand its offer “soon”. No launch date has been given, so this is one to watch rather than one to switch to today.
Social tariffs exist because broadband hits hardest when money is tight, and most of the people they are meant for are not on one. Ofcom’s own pricing and consumer engagement report, published on 26 February 2026, found that in June 2025 there were 532,000 customers on a fixed or mobile broadband social tariff. That is fewer than 9% of eligible households, and in October 2025 Ofcom found 70% of eligible households had never heard of social tariffs at all. Our own look at how many eligible homes miss out covers why that matters.
Who can get the 5G social tariff?
Vodafone says the 5G social tariff is for customers on government benefits, or customers it identifies as financially vulnerable. The exact list of qualifying benefits for the 5G version has not been published.
For Vodafone’s existing fixed line Essentials broadband, its own page lists eight qualifying benefits: Universal Credit, Jobseeker’s Allowance, Pension Credit, Employment Support Allowance, Income Support, Reduced Earnings Allowance, Personal Independence Payment and Disability Allowance. The 5G social tariff may use the same list, or it may not, so ask before you rule yourself out.
If you think you qualify, the route with most social tariffs is to contact the provider or use its sign up page with your benefit details to hand. Ask what proof it needs before you start, so you are not caught out halfway through.

What do we not know yet about the 5G social tariff?
Quite a lot. Vodafone has given the £11 starting price and the eligibility wording, and not much beyond that.
The speeds, the contract length, the router arrangements and any data limit on the 5G social tariff have not been confirmed. Nor has what the price becomes after the first term. A “from” price usually means some plans cost more, so treat £11 as a starting point, not a guaranteed bill.
What is on the table today is the fixed line version. Vodafone’s Essentials broadband is £20 a month for average download speeds of 80Mb, on a 12 month term with no exit fees. That is the number to hold the £11 against when the 5G tariff appears, because it tells you what Vodafone already charges the same customers for a service whose speeds are known.
Check the detail on Vodafone’s own Essentials broadband page before you commit. The 5G social tariff is not listed there yet, which is what you would expect from a tariff that has been announced but not launched.
None of this makes the 5G social tariff a bad idea. It means the announcement is a reason to take a look when it arrives, not a reason to switch blind. Ten minutes of checking is cheaper than a contract you regret.
Key takeaways
- Vodafone says its 5G social tariff will start from £11 a month with no upfront cost.
- It has been announced, not launched, and no start date has been given.
- It is aimed at people on government benefits or people Vodafone identifies as financially vulnerable.
- Speeds, contract length and data limits have not been confirmed.
- Vodafone’s existing fixed line Essentials is £20 a month for 80Mb on a 12 month term, which is the fair comparison.
What should you check before you switch to a 5G social tariff?
A low headline price is only useful if the rest of the deal holds up. Five checks are worth ten minutes.
1. Your signal
5G broadband runs on a mobile signal, not a phone line. Check coverage at your actual address, not just your postcode area. Our guide to 5G broadband coverage shows how.
2. The full monthly price
Ask what you will pay each month once any router or setup costs are counted. Vodafone quotes no upfront cost, so confirm that holds for your order.
3. Contract length and exit costs
Find out how long you are tied in and what leaving early costs. Vodafone’s fixed line Essentials runs 12 months with no exit fees, but nothing says the 5G version will match it, so ask.
4. Speed and any data limit
Ask for the typical speed at your address, and whether heavy use is slowed down. Speeds on 5G can move with how busy the local network is.
5. What you pay after the deal
Ask what the price becomes when the first term ends. Staying on a standard price when a cheaper one exists is the quiet default that suppliers count on, and it can cost more over a year.
5G social tariff or a fixed line: which suits you?
A fixed line comes into your home through a cable. A 5G social tariff uses a mobile signal instead. That one difference shapes most of the trade offs.
With 5G, the signal at your address matters most. Where you put the router matters too. A spot near a window often does better than a cupboard under the stairs.
A fixed line social tariff may be steadier if you have a good line into the property. A 5G social tariff may be worth a look where fixed line options are limited. Neither is automatically better, so compare price, term, speed and data limits side by side.
