How to Save Money on Motorhome Insurance

When you compare motorhome insurance, remember it is a vehicle and a home at once, and the policy has to cover both. Here is what to look at before you let a renewal roll over.

Agreed Value Beats Market Value

A standard motor policy pays market value at the time of the claim, which on a converted or well-specified motorhome can fall well short of what it is worth to you.

The Contents Are Not the Vehicle

Cover for what is inside, from bedding and cookware to bikes, awnings and gas equipment, normally sits under a separate and often modest limit.

Minutes, Not Paperwork

You will need the registration or the make, model and conversion details, the value, your annual mileage, where it is stored and who will drive it. That is about it.

What Should a Motorhome Policy Include?

Before you compare motorhome insurance quotes, check which of these are included and which are extras. The differences between policies are wider than on a car.

Agreed value

A figure fixed with the insurer up front rather than a market valuation guessed at claim time. Worth having on any motorhome that has been converted, upgraded or is hard to compare with others.

Contents and personal effects

Everything you carry inside, usually with its own limit and sometimes with single-item caps. Check whether awnings, bikes and gas bottles are covered and where they must be stored.

European use

Most policies allow a set number of days abroad each year. If you tour for longer, you need a policy written for extended trips rather than a standard one.

Storage and security

Where the vehicle sleeps moves the price a lot. A locked compound, a drive, an alarm, a tracker or a wheel clamp all count, and some insurers require them above a certain value.

Emergency accommodation

If the motorhome is undriveable or uninhabitable after an incident while you are away, this covers somewhere to stay and sometimes getting you home. Often an add-on.

Limited mileage discounts

Many motorhomes cover very few miles a year. Declaring realistic low mileage, and accepting a mileage cap, often brings the premium down noticeably.

What Really Matters When You Compare Quotes

A little know-how goes a long way. These are the levers that actually move a motorhome premium.

Why is storage such a big factor?

Motorhomes are high value, easy to identify and often left unused for months, which makes them a theft target. A secure storage site, a tracker, an immobiliser or a wheel clamp can all reduce the premium, and above certain values insurers may insist on them.

How can you lower a premium without thinning the cover?

Accept a realistic mileage limit, join an owners club where the insurer recognises it, improve security, pay annually rather than monthly, and keep the list of named drivers tight. Monthly payment is credit, so it costs more across the year.

What should you check before switching?

Whether the value is agreed or market, the contents and awning limits, how many days of European use are included, whether emergency accommodation is covered, the excess, and any conditions attached to storage over winter. If the motorhome is laid up for part of the year, ask what cover applies while it is not in use.

Motorhome Insurance FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask most before they switch.

  • What is agreed value cover?

The insurer agrees in advance what the motorhome is worth, so a total loss pays that figure rather than a market valuation made after the event. It usually requires photographs and sometimes an independent valuation, and it is the safest option for converted or upgraded vehicles.

  • Is my motorhome insured as a car or as something else?

As a specialist vehicle. Standard car insurers often will not quote at all, and those that do may not cover the living accommodation properly. It is worth comparing motorhome policies specifically rather than trying to force it onto a car policy.

  • Are the contents covered?

Usually up to a separate limit, and often a modest one. Bedding, cookware, electronics, bikes, awnings and gas equipment may all be treated differently, and some must be stored inside or locked to the vehicle to be covered. Check the limits against what you actually carry.

  • How many days can I spend abroad?

Most policies include a set allowance of European days each year, commonly a few weeks rather than months. Long tours need a policy written for extended travel, and cover cannot usually be extended once you have already left.

  • Does where I store it affect the price?

Considerably. A secure storage compound is priced very differently to a roadside parking space, and some insurers require a certain standard of storage or security device above a given value. Tell the insurer the truth about where it lives, because a theft claim will be checked against it.

  • Do I need cover while it is laid up over winter?

Most owners keep cover in place, because fire, theft and storm damage do not stop when the vehicle does. Some insurers offer a reduced laid-up rate for months when it is not driven. What you must not do is let cover lapse and assume the storage site is responsible.

  • Is a self-build or converted van insurable?

Yes, but you need an insurer who understands conversions, and you should declare the work and its value. Agreed value cover matters more here than anywhere else, since there is no obvious market price for a one-off build.

  • Will limited mileage reduce my premium?

Usually. Many motorhomes cover only a few thousand miles a year, and accepting a mileage cap that reflects that often brings the price down. Be realistic though, because exceeding a declared cap can affect a claim.

  • Does the policy cover me while the motorhome is being lived in?

Holiday use is normally fine. Living in it permanently, or using it as your only residence, is a different risk and many standard policies exclude it. If it is your full-time home, say so and look for a policy written for that.

  • Are awnings and bike racks covered?

Sometimes, often with their own limits and conditions, such as the awning being attached or the bikes being locked to a fitted rack. Wind damage to an erected awning is a common exclusion, so read that wording if you use one regularly.

  • What licence do I need to drive one?

It depends on the weight of the vehicle and when you passed your test, since older licences carry entitlements newer ones do not. Check your entitlement against the maximum authorised mass before buying, and tell the insurer what licence you hold.

  • When is the best time to compare motorhome insurance?

A few weeks before renewal, and ideally outside the spring rush when everyone is getting ready for the season. It gives you time to gather photographs and paperwork if you want an agreed value policy.
