Off grid heating costs work differently to everyone else’s
If your home runs on heating oil, LPG or another delivered fuel rather than mains gas, your off grid heating costs sit completely outside Ofgem’s price cap. There’s no ceiling on what you pay, no quarterly announcement, and no regulator stepping in when prices spike.
Around 1.7 million UK households are in this position, mostly in rural areas where the mains gas network never reached. It’s not a small or unusual group, but it’s one the price cap conversation tends to forget entirely. If you’re on mains gas instead, our gas only tariffs guide covers the equivalent ground for you.
Why are off grid heating costs so exposed to price swings?
Oil and LPG prices are set purely by the open market: global supply, shipping costs, and demand from colder weather. When a cold snap hits across Europe at the same time as everyone tops up their tank, prices can jump hard and fast, with nothing capping how far they go.
That’s the core difference. Mains gas and electricity customers have a backstop. Off grid households are simply exposed to whatever the market does that week, which is exactly why off grid heating costs can look wildly different from one delivery to the next.
Is there any help with off grid heating costs right now?
Yes, and it’s had a genuine boost recently. From 21 July 2026, oil and LPG properties in England and Wales became eligible for an increased £9,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant towards an air source or ground source heat pump, up from the previous rate, running until March 2027.
A heat pump won’t suit every off grid property, and it’s a bigger decision than switching supplier, so we’ve covered the detail separately in our full heat pump grant guide. Worth a proper read if a boiler replacement is even loosely on your radar.
How do you actually cut off grid heating costs day to day?
Timing your order helps more than most people realise. Demand for heating oil drops in summer, so buying and storing a top up then, if you have the tank space, is typically cheaper than an anxious winter refill when everyone else is ordering too.
Joining an oil buying club is the other big lever. A local coordinator, often a parish council or community group, batches up orders from dozens of neighbouring households and negotiates a bulk rate. There’s usually no obligation to order every round, so there’s little downside to signing up.
Avoid emergency top ups where you can. An urgent delivery when the tank’s nearly dry almost always costs more than planning a fortnight ahead. If you or a neighbour might need extra support in a cold snap, it’s worth checking the Priority Services Register too.

Frequently asked questions about off grid heating costs
- Can I switch heating oil supplier the way I’d switch an energy supplier?
- Yes, there’s no contract tying you to one oil supplier. You can shop around for each delivery, or join a buying club that effectively does the comparison for you at bulk rates.
- Is LPG cheaper than heating oil?
- It varies by region and season, and there’s no single answer that holds all year. Comparing quotes at the time you need a delivery is more reliable than assuming one fuel is always cheaper.
- Does the Warm Home Discount apply if I’m off grid?
- It can, depending on your electricity supplier and household circumstances, since the scheme is tied to your electricity account rather than your heating fuel. Check eligibility with your electricity supplier directly.
- What if I can’t afford a heat pump even with the £9,000 grant?
- The grant covers a large chunk of the cost but rarely all of it, and a heat pump isn’t the right fit for every off grid property. Sticking with oil or LPG while using the buying tips above is a perfectly reasonable choice.
- Is there emergency support if I run out of heating oil in winter?
- Some local councils and charities offer crisis grants for exactly this situation, particularly for vulnerable or low income households. It’s worth contacting your local council or Citizens Advice if you’re caught short.
Off grid heating costs will probably always run a little wilder than the capped world most of the UK lives in. But between timing your orders, joining a buying club and knowing the grants on offer, there’s more room to soften the swings than it can feel like from inside a cold snap.
