Virgin Media 2Gbps: 3 Key Checks to Avoid a Mistake

What is Virgin Media 2Gbps broadband?

Virgin Media 2Gbps is the provider’s Gig2 package, now being rolled out on its cable network for the first time. Virgin Media O2 announced on 27 October 2026 that Gig2 is live on its hybrid fibre coaxial network, the cable network most people know as Virgin Media.

Until now, 2Gbps speeds were tied to the provider’s newer full fibre areas. According to Virgin Media O2, the cable upgrade is cost effective and needs no civil engineering, and it is due to reach the majority of the network in 2027.

A quick note on the source. Everything below comes from Virgin Media O2’s own announcement, so treat it as the provider’s account and check the details for your address before you sign up.

Where is Virgin Media 2Gbps available?

Virgin Media 2Gbps on the cable network is available in selected areas only, and the provider’s own announcement is not quite consistent about how many. It says upgrades are complete in 18 locations, then names 16 of them: Newcastle, Bournemouth, Lancaster, Peterborough, Ipswich, Bath, Southend on Sea, York, Blackburn, Cambridge, Harrogate, Chelmsford, Manchester, Oxford, Preston and Portsmouth.

We have not blended those two numbers into one, because we cannot tell which is right. If your town is not on the list of 16, that does not settle it either way, and the only thing that will is the postcode checker.

Virgin Media O2 says the cable upgrades have taken place for around 3 million homes. Add the areas where Gig2 already runs over full fibre, which the provider puts at roughly 7 million premises, and it says more than 10 million households can get its fastest broadband today.

Those are provider figures and they will not tell you much about your own street. Availability can differ from one postcode to the next, and the provider says its postcode checker shows whether Gig2 is available at your address yet.

How much does Virgin Media 2Gbps cost?

Virgin Media O2 says Gig2 is available from £49.99 per month. That is the starting price, and it is not the price you will pay for the whole contract.

The same announcement says the price rises to £53.99 per month from April 2027 and to £57.99 per month from April 2028. The plan runs for a 24 month term, with no set up fee, and the provider says a 14 day cooling off period and other cancellation rights apply.

It is worth doing the sum yourself, because the headline price and the price in the second year are not the same. Both rises land inside the 24 month term, so a customer signing up now pays £49.99 for about five months, then £53.99, then £57.99 for the last few months of the contract. The rises are written into the deal, so they are not a surprise, but they are easy to miss in a monthly price on an advert.

Key takeaways

  • Virgin Media 2Gbps is live on the cable network now, with more due in 2027. The provider says 18 locations but names 16.
  • Gig2 starts from £49.99 a month, according to Virgin Media O2, and rises in April 2027 and April 2028, both inside the term.
  • It is a 24 month term, and it is available in selected areas only.
  • Upload speeds are lower than download speeds on the cable network.

What are the catches with Virgin Media 2Gbps?

The biggest catch is that Virgin Media 2Gbps is not symmetrical on the cable network. Virgin Media O2 gives average download speeds of 2,000Mbps and average upload speeds of 100Mbps. The provider says symmetrical speeds are not available on this kind of network, unlike on its XGS-PON full fibre network.

Upload matters if you send big files, back up to the cloud, video call a lot or work from home. For plain streaming and browsing, it is the download figure that most people notice.

There are a few smaller details in the small print. The provider says the Volt broadband speed boost benefits do not apply to Gig2. And the speeds are averages, so they describe a typical result and not a promise for your home.

It is also a 24 month contract. Our broadband contract check is a useful read before you commit to a long term, especially one with price rises built in.

Is Virgin Media 2Gbps worth it for your home?

That depends on what you actually use. For many homes a slower plan will be plenty, and 2Gbps is a lot of speed to pay for if nobody in the house will notice it.

It tends to suit busy households with lots of devices, heavy cloud users and anyone who regularly moves very large files. If that is not you, the sums may not add up. Our guide to what broadband costs in the UK gives you a benchmark for comparison.

This is where the Do Nothing Default bites. Most of us pick a broadband speed once and never revisit it, so a flashy number like 2Gbps is a good moment to ask what you would really use. A quick comparison is the cheap way to find out.

What you could save, or spend, depends on your address, the deals available there and the contract you choose. A comparison shows what is on sale at your postcode, from Virgin Media and from other providers, side by side. Roo handles the digging.

  • Virgin Media O2, rollout of 2Gbps broadband over its gigabit cable network for the first time, 27 October 2026. The £49.99 starting price and the April 2027 and April 2028 rises, the 24 month term and no set up fee, average speeds of 2,000Mbps down and 100Mbps up, the statement that symmetrical speeds are not available on the DOCSIS network unlike XGS-PON, around 3 million homes upgraded on cable and more than 10 million households able to get the fastest broadband, expansion to the majority of the network in 2027, the Volt exclusion and the 14 day cooling off period. This is also the source of the mismatch between 18 locations and the 16 named.
