Why Compare Insurance Before You Renew

Whatever you are insuring, the same three things decide whether you are paying a fair price.

The Auto Renewal Trap

Almost every policy rolls over unless you act. The letter arrives, the price has drifted up, and it reads as though the number has already been settled. It has not. A renewal quote is one insurer’s view of you, and the wider market often has a sharper one.

Like For Like Cover

The cheapest quote is not always the same policy. Check the excess, the level of cover and which extras are included before comparing on price, so a lower number is a genuine saving rather than a thinner policy with gaps in it.

Minutes, Not Paperwork

Each product asks a handful of questions, whether that is a registration, a postcode or a pet’s age. A few minutes of answers puts your details in front of a panel of UK providers, with no pressure to commit until you are ready.

Get More for Less When You Compare the Smart Way

Switching insurer is simpler than it looks. Cover from UK providers sits side by side, so the stronger deal is easier to spot.

Insurance FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask most before they compare.

  • Which types of insurance can I compare here?

Car, home, van, motorbike, bicycle, pet, breakdown cover and motorhome. Each has its own page, its own panel of providers and its own set of questions, because what prices a van is not what prices a pet.

  • Do you give advice on which policy to choose?

No. We introduce you to a comparison service and show you what cover costs. We do not advise, recommend or rank policies for your circumstances, and the choice of provider is entirely yours.

  • How do you make money if it is free to compare?

We are an introducer appointed representative of Seopa Ltd, trading as Quotezone.co.uk. If you buy a policy after following a link from here, we receive a commission from them. It costs you nothing extra, and it does not change the quotes you are shown.

  • Which insurance is a legal requirement?

Motor cover is. Driving a car, van, motorbike or motorhome on a public road requires at least third party insurance by law. Home, pet, bicycle and breakdown cover are all optional, though a mortgage lender will normally insist on buildings insurance as a condition of the loan.

  • What is an excess?

The amount you pay towards any claim. The compulsory excess is set by the insurer; the voluntary excess is chosen by you. Raising the voluntary excess usually lowers the premium, but only set it at a level you could genuinely afford to pay in one go.

  • Why does my renewal price go up when I have not claimed?

Insurers reprice every year, and claims costs across the whole market feed into your quote even if you personally have never claimed. Rules stop an insurer charging a renewing customer more than an equivalent new customer, but that only applies to their own price list, not to the wider market.

  • Does comparing quotes affect my credit score?

Getting quotes involves a soft search, which does not affect your credit score. A check that could leave a footprint generally only happens if you choose to pay monthly, because paying by instalments is a credit agreement.

  • Is it cheaper to pay annually or monthly?

Annually, in almost every case. Monthly payment is a form of credit, so interest is usually added and the total cost across the year ends up higher. If you can pay in one go, it is normally the cheaper route.

  • When is the best time to compare?

Before your renewal date rather than on the day it lands, so you have time to read what a policy actually includes instead of buying under pressure. Leaving it until the last minute narrows your options.

  • Can I cancel a policy mid-term if I find something cheaper?

Usually yes, though there may be a cancellation fee and any refund is normally pro rata for the unused part of the year. Work out whether the saving beats the fee. Within the first fourteen days of a new policy you normally have a cooling-off period.

  • What can invalidate a policy?

Not declaring something the insurer asked about is the most common cause, whether that is a previous claim, a modification, a business use or a change of address. Answer every question accurately, and tell the insurer when your circumstances change.
